Who God Says I Am: 10 Powerful Affirmations from the Bible

Do you ever struggle with feelings of insecurity, fear or not being good enough? It's easy to define ourselves by our failures, our circumstances or how others see us. But as children of God, our true identity is found in how God sees us.

The Bible is filled with powerful truths about who we are in Jesus Christ. When we meditate on these biblical affirmations, it renews our minds and transforms how we see ourselves.

In this article, we'll explore 10 key affirmations from Scripture that reveal our true identity as beloved sons and daughters of God. Let these divine truths sink into your heart and change the way you perceive yourself.

I Am a Child of God

One of the most foundational affirmations we have as believers is that we are children of God. John 1:12 tells us:

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

When we put our faith in Christ, we are adopted into God's family. We become His sons and daughters, calling Him "Abba, Father" (Romans 8:15).

Ephesians 1:5 says that God "predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ." Through Christ's redemptive work on the cross, we are adopted and accepted as God's own children.

This means your value and identity come not from your background, achievements or the opinions of others, but from your relationship with God as His beloved child. You are precious and honored in His eyes.

As 1 John 3:1 says "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!"

I Am a Friend of Jesus

Imagine if your best friend was the Savior of the world! As believers, that's exactly the privilege we have. Jesus calls us friends, not servants.

In John 15:15, He says:

I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

Jesus values friendship with us. He has confided completely in us, holding nothing back. He calls us to abide in intimate fellowship with Him each day through prayer, worship and time in His Word.

As a friend of Jesus, you have special access, insider information and a relationship like no other. You are more than a conqueror through the love of your best friend, Christ Jesus!

I Am Chosen, Holy and Beloved

Do you ever feel rejected, unseen or unimportant? God says the complete opposite is true! Ephesians 1 tells us that in Christ, we are chosen, holy and dearly loved by God.

Verse 4 says "For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight." God knew you and called you as His own long before you were even born. You are no afterthought, but His beloved child.

Not only are you chosen, but you have been made holy. Hebrews 10:10 tells us "we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." Through Christ's atoning work, your sins have been forgiven and you now stand blameless before God.

Lastly, Ephesians 1:6 says that God has "freely given us his grace in the One he loves." You are dearly cherished by your Heavenly Father. There is nothing you can do to make Him love you more. You are already fully loved!

I Am Saved and Forgiven

Perhaps one of the enemy's greatest tactics is to constantly remind us of our sins and make us feel ashamed. But Scripture powerfully affirms that in Christ, we are saved, redeemed and completely forgiven.

Colossians 1:13-14 proclaims:

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

No matter what you've done, through Christ, your sins have been nailed to the cross. You've been rescued from darkness and brought into God's Kingdom of light. The blood of Jesus cleanses you from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

You are no longer defined by your mistakes and shortcomings. You are now defined by the perfect righteousness of Christ that has become yours!

I Am a New Creation

When we put our faith in Jesus, we become brand new people on the inside. Our spirits are reborn and we are transformed into new creations in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17 declares:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

The old you with its sinful nature has been crucified with Christ (Romans 6:6). You now have new life as a new creation in Jesus. His resurrection power is at work in you, transforming you into His likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Your new identity in Christ changes everything. You are no longer who you used to be. You are a new person altogether!

I Am Redeemed

As new creations in Christ, we have also been bought back and redeemed from slavery to sin. Jesus paid the ultimate price through His blood to purchase our freedom.

Colossians 1:13-14 says "He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins."

We have been released from bondage through the redeeming blood of Jesus. 1 Peter 1:18-19 tells us:

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

Revel in the good news that you have been bought back by God Himself. You belong to Him now and are free to live in the fullness of your redemption.

I Am an Heir to God's Promises

One aspect of being in God's family is that we become co-heirs with Christ, inheriting all the promises of God. Romans 8:17 tells us:

Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

As co-heirs with Christ, we partake of the rich spiritual blessings God has for us. Ephesians 1:11 says that in Christ, we have "obtained an inheritance." This includes promises like:

  • Victory over sin and death (1 Corinthians 15:57)
  • Eternal life (John 3:16)
  • Abundant life here and now (John 10:10)
  • Wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Christ (Ephesians 1:17-18)
  • Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 1:3)
  • The indwelling Holy Spirit (Galatians 4:6)
  • Resurrection power at work within us (Philippians 3:10)
  • Confident access to come boldly before God's throne (Hebrews 4:16)
  • Supernatural strength to overcome trials (Philippians 4:13)
  • The authority to trample on snakes and scorpions (Luke 10:19)

As children of God, these blessings belong to us through faith in Jesus. We are heirs to all God has promised! There is an amazing spiritual inheritance waiting for you to claim each day.

I Am a Member of Christ's Body

When you put your faith in Jesus, you are baptized by the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). You become an integral member of His church.

1 Corinthians 12:27 tells us: "Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." You are a vital part of the living, breathing body of Christ on earth.

As a member of Christ's body, you are connected to all other believers. You each have a role to play using your unique spiritual gifts and talents. When one part of the body suffers, the whole body suffers. And when one part is honored, the whole body rejoices (1 Corinthians 12:26).

You have a crucial part in building up the body of Christ on earth. You are an indispensable member of His family.

I Have Bold Access to God

Through Jesus, we have direct access to come boldly before the throne of grace. We do not need a human priest to intercede for us. Christ Himself is our great High Priest (Hebrews 4:14).

The veil separating us from God's presence has been torn in two through Christ's sacrifice (Matthew 27:51). We can now approach Him with confidence and freedom.

Hebrews 4:16 encourages us:

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

God welcomes you into His presence. He invites you to pour out your heart to Him, trusting Him for grace, strength and help. You never have to feel distant from your Heavenly Father.

I Am Adopted into God's Family

God's Word is clear that when we believe in Jesus, we are adopted into God's family as His own children. John 1:12 tells us:

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

Through faith, we are born again into the family of God. Our adoption papers have been signed in the blood of Christ. Ephesians 1:5 says:

In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.

You are wanted, loved and accepted fully into God's family. He is your perfect Heavenly Father who will never leave you.

These powerful truths change everything about how we see ourselves. We are secure in our identity as beloved children of God. We can live confidently in the purpose He has for our lives.

When we meditate on these biblical affirmations, it renews our minds to see ourselves the way God sees us. It lifts us out of insecurity and fear into the freedom of our true identity in Christ.

My prayer is that these Scriptural truths seep deep into your heart and transform you. You are so precious, honored and loved by your Heavenly Father. You are chosen, holy and dearly loved by the King of kings. You are a new creation with a bright future in Christ. You are God's beloved child. This is who you are!
