“What does OBGYN stand for?” This is a question asked by many of my friends who aren’t really into the medical field but ask this anyway. So I thought I’d give them a bit of an answer to their questions. For those who know me personally, OBGYN refers to an Obstetrician-gynecologist. An OB/GYN is much more than just a doctor.
It’s one of the few specialties that is actually gender-neutral! This is weird because the only specialty that is gender-specific is in neonatology. Obstetrics and Gynecology are a branch of medicine that is focused on pregnancy, fertility, and the female reproductive system. There is a lot of difference between the two, though not just in philosophy but also in practice. So what does OBGYN mean?
The word OOBY is a combination of two words – Obstetrician and Gynecologist. A licensed Obstetrician is one who has received an accredited degree from an approved medical school, passing the board exam for Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ANDROMEDA). NOT all obstetricians are pediatricians, so if you’re asking what does obgyn stands for, it stands for either” Obstetrician-Gynaecologist” or” Obstetrician-oncologist”. But for the purposes of this article, we’ll be focusing on the latter.

Doctors who want to specialize in a particular area of medicine such as endocrinology, pediatrics, internal medicine, etc, must complete a specific residency program after completing their undergraduate degree.
Both a gynecologist and an obstetrician have the job title of obstetrician-on-call. This basically means that they are automatically available to assist mothers when they experience complications from childbirth. For instance, if you have a premature birth, you can go to a doctor that is an obstetrician-on-call to help care for you. If you have an infection in your vagina, you can visit a doctor that is a gynecologist to help you get treated for that.
If you choose to be a Gynecologist, you will attend graduate school and obtain an undergraduate degree. After graduation, you will likely begin to work in an outpatient clinic in a city that is closest to where you live. You will generally be the primary caregiver for a woman that gives birth. You will help the mother to take care of herself during childbirth and then help her with delivering the baby. It is your job to make sure that everything goes smoothly and that the mother is able to get through the process.
